LOCAL SCHOOL CHILDREN ASSIST IN PLANTING 300 TREES
GRANT AWARD FOR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENTS TO PARISH

3rd April, 2005

Aldercar and Langley Mill Parish Council has recently received news of an award totalling £7,800 (£9,150 gross to include mentor from BTCV).

This award from BTCV Conservation Group will allow an environmental project to go ahead on the former opencast Godkin site. The site, donated to the Parish Council by British Coal in 1995, will benefit from 300 new native trees being introduced, with shrubs and wild flower seeds. Picnic benches, seating and bird boxes will further enhance the site.

Pupils from Langley Mill Junior School helped out on 10th and 15th March, when each pupil planted a tree on the site (282 pupils in total). BTCV leaders with volunteers, School staff, Parish Council Members and Staff and P. C. Clive Booth from Derbyshire Constabulary all assisted in the project.

When completed, the project will improve the landscape of the surrounding area, which is recovering from coal extraction operations. Green Woodpecker, Goldcrest, Wren and Herons are regular visitors to the site. Footpaths and bridleways are well maintained and used by many local people and visitors to the area. As with many open areas, residents have suffered from off-road motorbikers unlawfully using the fields and paths, but Derbyshire Constabulary is making good progress in identifying the culprits.

A sum of funding will be earmarked by the Parish Council for maintenance of the site over the next few years.
